Elon Musk’s Tesla was accused of manhandling hazardous waste throughout California by the attorneys representing 25 counties, such as San Francisco, Alameda, Los Angeles, and more, from the state. However, the accusers did not decide it overnight. They tried to settle the case with the company for over six years, which did not turn fruitful.
For instance, Tesla claimed to be communicating with some district attorneys to settle the case in October 2023 but did not inform anything after that. Its vehicle assembly plant is in Fremont, California, and its engineering headquarters is in Palo Alto, California.
Electric vehicles reduce carbon emissions but produce a lot of hazardous waste while being manufactured which affects our natural resources. Thus, this case is an example of how we must not tolerate negligence toward our natural resources. Ironically, Elon Musk reportedly frequently uses his private jet, which contributes to greenhouse gas emissions.
Tesla Accused Of Manhandling Hazardous Waste
Specifically, Tesla allegedly improperly labeled the waste dumped hazardous waste to the wrong landfills in California was not equipped with proper disposal methods, and did not train its employees to handle the waste. The lawsuit was filed in San Joaquin County on 30 January, and the company took time to respond.
Hazardous waste from the company included diesel fuel, paints, lead acid batteries, aerosols, and more. Giants like Tesla might occasionally violate the environmental rules, but this time, the company messed with the basic ones for a longer period.
The district attorneys emphasized words such as ‘intentionally’ and ‘negligence’ while accusing the electric vehicle maker. They want the company not to commit this mistake again and pay a penalty for its previous deeds. Thus, it could end up paying $70,000 for every violation.
On the one hand, Tesla’s customers are glad to reduce carbon emissions by using electric cars. On the other hand, it has its own struggles regarding lax compliance and environmental hypocrisy. The Political Economy Research Institute considered it the 89th toxic air polluter in 2021.
Complaints against the company emerged a long ago and undercover agents began an investigation under The San Francisco District Attorney’s Environmental Division in 2018. They got enough evidence and improper disposal of additional hazardous waste. The company reportedly cooperated with the state government to fix its mistakes after the matter reached the court.

The Case Gets Settled
The San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins released a press statement according to which Tesla must pay $1.5 million as the settlement fees. From that, $1.3 million will be for civil penalties and $200,000 to overcome the investigation costs.
The company owns 18 solar energy centers and 57 car service facilities in California. $1.5 million must not be a big deal for the company because its reported income was $7.93 billion in 2023 Q4.
Moreover, a third party must conduct annual waste audits for the following five years, and Tesla must spend 10% of its income on that. It must also teach proper waste disposal methods to its employees, and the company must thoroughly follow the rules. The complaint and the judgment were filed on Tuesday, but the latter was not approved till Friday.
Issues Previously Faced By Tesla
In 2023, Germany sued Tesla for environmental violations, including water contamination, in the country. The company revealed that the Securities and Exchange Commission was analyzing its waste management practices in 2022. The same year, it had to pay in the name of a settlement after getting sued by the EPA for violating air toxic emission standards.
