The third actor of Indian descent to get nominated for an Oscar, Dev Patel, was busy directing his upcoming action thriller till 2021. Accordingly, the Monkey Man Trailer was dropped on YouTube on 26 January 2024. The 3-minute and 16-second-long video has more than 3 million viewers at the time of writing, and the numbers keep rising.

Dev Patel must have decided to begin the new year with more stamina because he has written, created, co-produced, and starred in the film. He was announced as a director for Monkey Man in October 2018, and the completion of filming was announced in March 2021.

The film initially came under Netflix, but the co-producer, Jordan Peele, insisted the film be released in theatres. Thus, its distribution rights were shifted from Netflix to Universal Pictures. Twitter users think of it as Dev’s Bond film, while some call it ‘John Wick In Mumbai.’ Monkey Man will be released on 05 April 2024 in the US and Canada.

Monkey Man Trailer

The Monkey Man Trailer shows a broken Dev practicing for a fight. According to Ramayana, Lord Hanuman broke Ravana’s ego by setting his Lanka on fire. Similarly, Dev wears a monkey mask and steps into the ring for a professional fight. On the other hand, he has a secret fight with the powerful people responsible for his mother’s death.

Dev must fight the powerful evil people to revenge for his mother’s death and protect the poor living beings from upcoming threats. Indian actors Makarand Deshpande and Sikandar Kher are the two villains highlighted in the trailer.

People’s Reaction

Twitter users appreciate Dev for defining his own character rather than depending on British filmmakers to cast him stereotypically. Otherwise, Hollywood might have never cast him as an action hero. The film is packed with well-choreographed action sequences by Brahim Chab, who previously worked with Jackie Chan and other action heroes.

An Indian film, Animal,  starring Ranbir Kapoor, was released last year, and some people call Monkey Man the British version of Animal. The filmmakers do not claim it to be a John Wick sequel. However, some viewers link them together, looking at Dev’s combat with Sikandar Kher, and call the former Indian John Wick.

YouTubers appreciate the editing and background music for the trailer. Moreover, they are surprised to see Dev as an action hero. He skipped all side missions and controlled the whole film by serving different positions.

Dev is best known for his role, Jamal Malik, in the British drama film Slumdog Millionaire (2008). Besides that, he appeared in The Wedding Guest (2018), Hotel Mumbai (2018), The Road Within (2014), and more. Currently, he must be busy with the post-production of an upcoming psychological horror film, Rabbit Trap (TBA).

Ironically, Dev landed Jamal Patel’s role in Slumdog Millionaire because the director did not want the actor looking like a hero. He played a poor Muslim boy born and brought up in India.
